Addison, Beyonce, Trevor, Zoe, and Violet share their reflections on LASA’s Public Health meeting in September:
Today at LASA, after reflecting about our summers outside the downtown branch of the LA Public Library, we listened to a presentation about the extensive resources the library has to offer [from Young Adult Librarian Amanda Charles]. Then, trying our best not to get lost, we explored various exhibitions in the library, such as the “Something in Common” exhibit, which highlighted some unconventional organizations uniting various communities like the Rolling Pigeon Society and the Cloud Watching
Society.
Gathered in the courtyard, we heard from Dr. Cindy Willard, where we compared how public health officials and medical doctors address the problem of asthma, to compare how each would approach a similar issue. We were so excited to learn about the various effects of the pandemic from someone who understood the extent of the repercussions in both the clinical and public health sphere.
After a delicious lunch, we proceeded to hear from Professor Kristen Choi [from UCLA’s School of Nursing], learning about the ways in which nurses contribute to aiding vulnerable populations, and how mental health is researched and understood in both a medical and public health standpoint.
We had so much fun today and can’t wait for next month!
Thank you to LASA students, adult partners, and to our guests, Amanda, Cindy, and Kristen.
