Look at the Stars

LASA boarded a bus and climbed 5,000+ feet to visit the Mt. Wilson Observatory this month. We visited to explore the space and to consider LA’s contributions to our larger understandings of the cosmos. Thanks to our guide Nathan Krumm for sharing the history of the space as well as walking us through three modules and showing us the spectacular telescopes.

Alondra reflects, “the drive to the observatory was BEAUTIFUL. When we got to the top, above the clouds, it genuinely felt like we were on another island. It was an amazing view and overall experience. Being around the beautiful nature was so refreshing. Then, seeing the telescope was fascinating, just because of the size and small details that we don’t often think of. The comparison between the sun, Jupiter, and Earth was crazy. We don’t really realize how small we are unit those little reality checks. It’s kind of scary to think of too.”

We enjoyed lunch together – although the bugs proved a bit annoying – and then made our way back down the mountain. LASA students shared that they are feeling more connected to each other as we start to consider the end of the year; we celebrate these new friendships and look forward to gathering again next month.
