The Orange Grove at the Huntington

laserviceacademy.org News

Excited to be gathering in person for the first time in 2022, LASA met at The Huntington to learn more about food insecurity from LASA Graduate Patrick Hudnut.

Patrick currently works at the Hollywood Food Coalition.  LASA asked Patrick questions ranging from his experiences in LASA, the underlying causes of food insecurity to current attempts to address access to quality food. Patrick shared news about the growing partnerships of the Hollywood Food Coalition to bring in food from restaurants and grocery stores and then send that out to food coalitions and sites that can make the best use on any given day.

We appreciated his thoughts also on treating everyone who comes into the Hollywood Food Coalition with respect and dignity.

We then walked across the grounds to the 12-acre orange grove with Huntington Vice President for Advancement and External Relations Randy Shulman. Randy shared with us Henry Huntington’s original vision for the orange grove as well as some details on the current uses of the oranges – from orange marmalade to the partnership with Food Forward. Then, we picked boxes of oranges for Patrick to take to the Hollywood Food Coalition and partners to serve their guests.

Thank you to Patrick and Randy! We look forward to meeting again next month.
